R-134A
R-134A or Tetrafluoroethane belongs to a group of chemicals called hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and is also known as HFC R-134A.
Description
R-134A was developed to replace chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerants that contain chlorine, which damages the ozone layer. Hydrofluorocarbons are colorless, odorless, nonflammable, noncorrosive gases or liquids of low toxicity mainly used in air conditioning systems in newer automotive vehicles, refrigerators, and freezers as a coolant/refrigerant. Also used as propellants for aerosols by the pharmaceutical industry and as a plastic foam blowing in the manufacturing industry.
It is now being used as a replacement for R-12 chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerant in the area of centrifugal, rotary screw, scrolls, and reciprocating compressors.
